I try to do any many of household jobs like carpet cleaning as possible myself, and don't like to pay some stranger $100 for jobs like this (plus I've had less than positive experiences doing so). My Hoover "wind tunnel" dry vac has been flawless for six years, so I decided to go for it. I paid $350 shipped from Amazon. Looked for it at Kohls, but could not find one.
Overall, I'm impressed, it does a very nice job. The downstairs carpet had not been shampooed in about four years, and when I got done, I had two tank loads of black water. Impressive. The upstairs carpet is about 1-1/2 years old and still in good shape, but this machine removed alot of brown dirt from it as well. The brushes kick up fuzzballs on newer carpet you have to pick up by hand, since the machine just pushes them around. After I was done with the whole house, the brushes were covered with hair and carpet fibers, so I used a shop vac to clean them off, which is a bit time consuming. I would plan on cleaning the brushes every time you do a large job, in order to maintain good performance. As far as emptying the tanks, you can clean one smaller bedroom before the dirty water tank has to be dumped and the clean tank refilled, which isn't too bad. While the attachment brush does a good job with stairs, it is extremely akward trying to balance this heavy machine (the hose is short) while you're cleaning, and the machine seems to drip water (dirty water?) on the stairs you just finished. I would probably use a smaller machine for stairs if I had to do it again. Overall, though, worth the price in my opinion, this machine should pay for itself in a couple of years, before the warranty expires. I'll update if it breaks :)
